Central Michigan became a real threat in the MAC standings in a hurry last season. Under first-year coach Matt Drinkall, CMU posted its best season in five years: seven wins, five in MAC play, and went from third-to-last in the league to fifth place and a bowl game.

Of course, with Drinkall being a former Iowa player and staffer, and most-previously an offensive line coach at Army, there was a very particular brand of football CMU was expected to see on the field. CMU wanted to get super physical on offense. It. wanted to have a second tight end and a fullback on the field. And, more militantly, the team desperately needed to tighten-up with the football.

CMU was either last or second-to-last in the MAC in each of the last three seasons in turnover margin. In 2025, without needing much statistical improvement in the rushing game, CMU was a +5 in turnover margin.

An improved year on the record book without over-dramatic changes to what CMU was already sort of doing under Jim McElwain, and the Chippewas were a fourth-quarter letdown away from making a drastic shift in how the MAC standings could’ve gone.

While CMU still would’ve likely missed the MAC championship, it’s worth remembering that it was a late fourth-quarter letdown against Western Michigan away from there being a 5-way tie for first place in the final MAC standings.

This year, the Chippewas return seven starters (well, down to six with one major injury) from last year, and three on defense. While CMU was picked to finish ninth in last year’s MAC standings by the league’s coaches, I’d expected more optimism by and large going into 2026 for this group.

But before any ball gets played, we have to keep reading through these rosters. Again, we use these notes below to help answer these simple questions: Who returns? Who’s gone? And who joins the team this year?
