Eastern Michigan has never had a women’s golf team make it to the NCAA golf championships before, let alone survive the first cut.
But through 54 holes at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif. over the weekend, EMU placed 10th out of 30 teams to advance into the fourth round of stroke play.
As a team, EMU shot +6 through the first three rounds (870 strokes), and will begin Round #4 of competition today.
EMU got off to a hot start Friday as it shot a two-under par (286 strokes), one of seven teams to shoot under the course’s 72-par on the day. Two, Savannah de Bock, Janae Leovao, were minus-one at 71 strokes, while another two, Baiyok Suktrerm, Jasmine Leovao, shot an even 72.
Saturday was a tougher day across the board (43 total more strokes across all teams than the day before), and EMU was 7-over par (295). Sukterm was the only Eagle to shoot even with the course; de Bock was +1 in Round 2, and the Leovano sisters both went +3 on the day.
In the third round, EMU’s combined 13 birdies helped keep its combined strokes to 289, and finished one-over par as a group, tied with three others for the 13th-best score on the day.
EMU advanced to Round 4 with its 10th-place start through the weekend. Also advancing: Stanford (-21), USC (-16), Oklahoma State (-10), Texas (-6), Iowa State (-3), Arkansas (-3), Florida (+2), Arizona State (+2), Duke (+2), Pepperdine (+8), Missouri (+8), SMU (+10), North Carolina (+10), and Northwestern (+12).
The top 15 teams plus the top nine individuals on a non-advancing team will play in a fourth round of stroke play today, and the field will be narrowed down to eight teams to begin match play.
EMU will tee off with Pepperdine and Missouri players today at 10:41 a.m. PT (1:41 p.m. ET). The GOLF Channel will have coverage of the event at 2:30 p.m. PT (5:30 p.m. ET), but it can also be watched online via streaming.
